Australian company violates human rights

HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
31st session
March 2016

[Excerpt from the statement]

We welcome the fact that Australia has agreed to implement the Equator’s recommendation, which notes the need to, and I quote, “strengthen the normative framework for the protection of human rights, including the monitoring, follow-up, investigation and redress of human rights violations committed by Australian companies on its territory and in third countries”.

The Australian government’s commitment to promoting human rights at a global level is also reflected in its Universal Periodic Review undertakings. This commitment demonstrates Australia’s willingness to promote and protect human rights not only at home, but also abroad.

Such a commitment is important because, according to our information (as set out in our written contribution no. 4), there is an increase in human rights violations resulting from the activities of OceanaGold, an Australian company active in gold mining.
