HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
13th session
01 March – 26 March 2010
[Excerpt from the statement]
We welcome the commitment of the Special Rapporteur on the right to food and his valuable contributions to the effective implementation of this right.
In his report on ‘Large-scale land acquisitions and leases ’1 , the Special Rapporteur proposes minimum measures and principles to be respected in this context. While these constitute important safeguards and this initiative is to be welcomed, many civil society actors remain extremely concerned about the serious risks to the enjoyment of the right to food of present and future generations implied by these transactions. These measures and principles are not sufficient in themselves to protect the rights of peoples and groups made extremely vulnerable by globalization and malnutrition.
