HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION
57th session
19 March – 21 April 2001
[Excerpt from the statement]
Despite the condemnation by numerous observers and experts, both within and outside the UN, of the inhuman nature of embargoes, they continue to be imposed, whether under the auspices of the UN or not. The condemnation of their illegality and their violation of the United Nations Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenants on Human Rights, the 1949 Geneva Conventions and their two protocols has unfortunately not prevented the continuation of this practice.
