Many obstacles stand in the way of the realisation of the right to development, starting with unfair trade, the inequitable distribution of wealth, private control over natural resources and their waste, the burden of foreign debt, non-respect for the right of peoples to self-determination and for the sovereignty of States, and the desire for domination of peoples by the powerful instead of genuine international cooperation.
