However, this right is more relevant than ever if we take into account the fact that the sovereignty of many States over their natural wealth and resources is being undermined by the advent of the WTO. The WTO imposes rules that run counter to this right, not to mention structural adjustment programmes and the debt burden, which constitute major obstacles to the right of peoples to decide freely on their political, economic, social and cultural development.
