For Global Trade in the Service of Food Sovereignty: LVC and CETIM’s Call to UNCTAD

02/12/2025

UNCTAD – United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
16th Session
October 20-23, 2025

The LVC representative advocated before UNCTAD for a radical overhaul of international trade, calling to move away from neoliberal logic to place food sovereignty and human rights at the center of trade. Faced with the deadlock at the WTO and worsening inequalities, she identified UNCTAD as the legitimate forum to rebuild a solidarity-based multilateralism capable of treating food as a fundamental right rather than a commodity. This plea for a new trade framework requires concrete measures: prioritizing regional supply chains, protecting local markets, prohibiting dumping and speculation, as well as guaranteeing decent incomes for producers, to ensure peoples’ right to self-determination and the future of the planet.
