Unilateral military interventions: the UN must respond!

27/07/2004

SUBCOMMITTEE ON THE PROMOTION AND PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
56th session
26 July – 13 August 2004

[Excerpt from the statement]

On 20 March 2003, the US-British coalition launched a military attack on Iraq, under the pretext that the regime in power possessed weapons of mass destruction, which resulted in an occupation. The United States thus ushered in the era of preventive war, opening the door to all kinds of abuses. Two months later, the UN endorsed the occupation of this country through Resolution 1483, adopted by the Security Council. Today, the human rights violations committed by the occupying forces are evident. Not only are they incapable of ensuring security in this country, but they have also provoked an influx of fundamentalist groups into Iraq.
