In June 1945, the peoples of the United Nations resolved to proclaim their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the promotion of social progress and better standards of life, and to that end to employ international institutions for the promotion of the economic and social advancement of all peoples. In Article 1, the peoples of the United Nations have set themselves the purpose of achieving international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights.
