Drafting a binding treaty on transnational corporations: opaque negotiations and attempts to oust them

17/03/2023

HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
52nd session
(27 February-4 April 2023)

The impunity of TNCs is the reason for the creation of the Intergovernmental Working Group charged with drafting a binding treaty. However, we are concerned by the opaque way in which the negotiations are being conducted and the attempts to sideline the participation of civil society.

Furthermore, the Working Group Presidency’s diversionary strategy to dilute the content of the future treaty by presenting “informal” text proposals is unacceptable. These “informal” proposals must be withdrawn from the negotiating table, as the democratic nature of the process is at stake.
