Declaration on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

19/03/2001

HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION
57th session
19 March – 21 April 2001

[Excerpt from the declaration]

On the initiative of CETIM and the American Association of Jurists (AAJ), an NGO petition was launched to this effect, calling on the 57th session of the Human Rights Commission, on the one hand, to affirm the primacy of fundamental rights, in particular the right to life over intellectual property rights and, on the other hand, to ask the United States of America to withdraw its complaint to the WTO against Brazil and the 39 transnational pharmaceutical companies to abandon their lawsuit against South Africa.
