It cannot be claimed that the free market is the only means of achieving development when we know and see the harmful effects of ‘globalisation’ on human rights, when we know that developing countries cannot participate fully in economic decision-making and trade policy-making at the international level, and finally when we know that these same countries are buckling under the weight of debt and suffering from deteriorating terms of trade.
