HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
10th session
02 March – 27 March 2009

[Extract from the statement]

The report on the mission to the World Trade Organization finally allows everyone to see the links between the various areas of international relations and puts an end to the fallacious arguments claiming that there are issues that should not be debated in this forum. What remains to be resolved is the inconsistency within the United Nations system and among States, in particular between the normative approach and the policies put in place.
It seems to us that over and above the voluntary commitments that each of the States party to international trade agreements could make, there is a general obligation for each of the members of the United Nations arising from the resolution taken in 1945 by the peoples to proclaim their faith in fundamental human rights and to use international institutions to promote the economic and social progress of all peoples.
